Aidan Crossey's Irish Mandolin Vol One

Links

Aidan Crossey is in the process of compiling a "various artists" CD of Irish (and related) traditional music on the mandolin.

I am currently contacting artists direct to seek their involvement.  However Iwould like this CD to serve as a vehicle for the "unknown" mandolinist as well as for the well-known "big hitters".

Therefore, if you would like the opportunity for your work to feature on the album when it appears (estimated end-2005), then please send material for my consideration to:

      Aidan Crossey
      Pay The Reckoning
      20 Algernon Road

      United Kingdom

Please be advised that material is submitted on the basis that it will not be returned - so please don't send the only or last-surviving copy of any material which you have recorded.

Before submitting any material please take time to read through "the small print" below.  (I am deeply indebted to Kevin Krell, Executive Director of The International Traditional Music Society, Inc. for his invaluable assistance in helping me draft much of what follows.  Kevin is responsible for the magnificent "Wooden Flute Obsession" series - an exemplary lesson in how, with passion and deep respect, to present Irish Traditional Music to the CD-buying audience.  Visit http://www.worldtrad.org for further information on Kevin's projects to date.)

THE SMALL PRINT

I am seeking solo mandolin recordings (accompaniment OK, but mandolin is the out-front melody instrument). I will happily consider recordings of mandolin-family instruments (mandola, octave mandola, bouzouki, etc.) for inclusion, but I would intend the CD to feature as many tracks as possible where the "standard" mandolin is featured as the melody instrument.

All Sound Recordings (actual audio tracks) are donated for this non-exclusive use (I acquire no rights), including mechanical licenses where possible. I will send a short informal contract specifically limiting my use to this non-profit purpose.  However, for the moment please be assured that this is a very limited license and will not prevent you from entering into any other agreements concerning this music. You should know that the CD will be marketed via Pay The Reckoning (http://www.paythereckoning.com) and will not be available via mass distribution channels. Since we are a non-commerical organisation, I can’t offer you any artist royalties. But my goal is to offer widespread exposure of your music to individuals and organisations interested in this music genre.

I will only use a recording with which you are satisfied. While there is no direct financial benefit to the artists (only a promotional benefit), it is hoped that the compilation helps to provide them with teaching, workshop, performance, and recording opportunities.

If you agree to participate, my hope is to receive at least 1 set of tunes (1 track) of length approx. 3:30 (anything from about 2 minutes to near 5 minutes, slightly plus or minus), in 16-bit CD Audio format (CD-R). However, please note that I am happy to accept recordings in any other format including analogue (e.g. cassette tape) which I will digitise prior to inclusion.  The time frame I'd like to work with is to receive final material by end-July 2005. Early notification of tune titles would help me to manage potential conflicts/duplications of tunes, clear compositions, prepare and forward contracts, and perform preliminary CD insert and webpage design.

Therefore if you are interested in submitting material for consideration, please email me as soon as possible, letting me know which set(s) you are hoping to mail.  The email address is - as ever - aidan@paythereckoning.com

I'm looking forward to working with all artists who wish their work to be considered for inclusion over the term of this project.

NB - added 3rd June 2005.  I am happy to accept tracks emailed as mp3s, which I will convert afterwards to an appropriate format for registering on CD.
